part 8 Dad's Magnificent Radio Collection: where the magic happens

This is it. Every radio has been posted, at least every working one. This is where the magic happens, the workshop.  Several radios wait for their turn at restoration. In time, they will all be back to their original working condition.

Here's a worthy challenge.  I have heard that toasters are among the most difficult household appliances to fix, so I can't imagine how much work would be involved here. But what a fun radio.

I have a soft spot myself for silly gadgets. Years ago in Toronto, I found this wacky Spongebob shower radio in the laundry room of my apartment building where tenants dropped off things they didn't want anymore.

I wonder if it still works.

This must be the modern lower priority section of the room.

I expect this one will get all the attention it needs.

I remember this one well. My brother returned home with it in the early 80s from Texas with a case of cassette tapes.

This one sat on the dining room table in the 70s. I first heard The Shadow when CFBC FM started re-broadcasting old shows one night a week. That was an early introduction to the Theater of the Mind for me.

Old radios require old tools.

With so few stations, particularly AM, broadcasting now, these wonderful early home entertainment centers can still be centrepieces. People are retrofitting them with MP3 and bluetooth ports, playing whatever they like through the original speakers.

All tech has its day but these radios will endure, designed at times when things were intended to last.

Fisher Lakes Rockwood Park Saint John, NB

Fisher Lakes is another sweet swimming spot in Rockwood Park.  You can enter the water at just about any place you want.  Avoid any of the algae areas.

There are a few small coves to serve as semi-private beaches.

A road along the north side is lined with monuments to all of the provinces and territories.

Lots of people like to just sit quietly and feed the ducks but it's a bad idea. Killing animals with kindness. They delay their migration or hibernation as long as the food keeps coming and can't survive the winter.

Bahia Coyula, coast of Oaxaca

Bahia Coyula, roughly between Pochutla and Huatulco

I rode past the exit the first time. It is just before the high bridge over the wide river.

20 minutes later after a slow smooth ride through beautiful countryside.

I sensed my food was almost ready when this little guy made himself comfortable under my table just in case I dropped something.

He was right! He knew.

Across the shallow river (watch out for hidden rocks in the muddy water) step carefully around the pile of hurricane driven driftwood

And there is another beach.

Miles and miles of empty beach.

Time to climb to the lighthouse.

There is a well marked trail. I wouldn't call it physically difficult but there are few dicey steps that triggered the knee locking vertigo I get at high places. I should really stick to trails with firm guard rails.  Knowing I would have to double back, I cleared my head, took 2 extra deep breaths and I made it.

The only reason I force myself up to such heights is for the view.
I didn't come any closer to the edge than this.
